S-130/190

S-130/190 is the introductory training for new wildland firefighters.  The course actually includes four NWCG classes: S-130 (Basic Firefighter Training), S-190 (Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior), L-180 (Human Factors on the Fireline), and I-100 (Introduction to the Incident Command System).

S-130 Basic Firefighter Training

Course Description:  This course is designed to provide entry level firefighters skills. Many of the units are set up so they can be taught in either the classroom or the field.  A version of L-180, Human Factors on the Fireline, has been included as part of this course.

Objectives

  • Explain what the LCES (Lookouts, Communications, Escape Routes, and Safety Zones) system is and how it relates to the Standard Firefighting Orders.
  • Construct fireline to required standards using various methods.
  • Strengthen, reinforce, and use holding actions on a fireline.
  • Extinguish the fire with or without the use of water.
  • Complete assigned tasks in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Given an assignment in a wildfire environment, describe factors in that environment which could impact safety.

S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior

Course Description:  This course provides instruction in the primary factors affecting the start and spread of wildfire and recognition of potentially hazardous situations. S-190 is typically taught in conjunction with or prior to Basic Firefighter Training, S-130. It is designed to meet the fire behavior training needs of a firefighter type 2 (FFT2) on an incident as outlined in the PMS 310-1, Wildland Fire Qualification System Guide and the position task book developed for the position.

Objectives

  • Identify and discuss the three sides of the fire triangle.
  • Identify the environmental factors of fuels, weather and topography that affect the start and spread of wildland fire.
  • Describe the contributing factors that indicate the potential for increased fire behavior that may compromise safety.

Target Group: Entry-level firefighters

Schedule and Location

S-130/190 is offered as a daytime or an evening class.  The daytime class runs May 14-16, 2008 from 0800-1700, and the evening class runs May 12-16, 2008 from 1730-2200.  Students in both classes will attend the same practical sessions May 17 and 18, 2008 from 0630-1730.  

The course is located at the Boulder Emergency Squad (3532 Diagonal Hwy, Boulder, CO 80301).  (Map and driving directions)

More Information and Registration

Students must be affiliated with a wildland firefighting or other public safety agency. Course fees are $65 for students affiliated with an agency in Boulder County and $75 for students from agencies outside of Boulder County.
